Video Israel’s flotilla raid sparks local protest 

VIDEO ISRAEL — Supporters and detractors of the Israel government squared off Friday evening downtown, claiming opposite corners of the intersection of Front Street and Broadway downtown, with Palestinian flags waving on one side and Israeli flags on the other.


The two sides were brought out by an incident that took place Monday, the raid by Israeli commandos of a Turkish ship, part of a six-ship flotilla carrying supplies to the blockaded territory of Gaza. The raid led to fighting that left nine passengers dead, including a U.S. citizen.


Gaza has been under a blockade for three years by Israel with the cooperation of Egypt, an attempt to curtail the Palestinian resistance organization Hamas, which took control of the territory in 2007. The Israeli government had warned the flotilla not to breach the blockade.
